Is it broken?
Signs your heat needs a repair
- No heat, or air that blows cold
- The system short cycles or will not stay on
- Banging, rattling, or grinding noises
- A burning smell, or the pilot or ignition keeps failing
Before you call, check these
Two minutes that sometimes save a visit.
- 1
Thermostat
Set to Heat (not Emergency Heat), a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries.
- 2
Power switch
Furnaces have a light-switch style power switch nearby. Make sure it is on, and that the breaker has not tripped.
- 3
Filter
A badly clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut itself off. Replace it if it is gray and packed.
- 4
Vent pipes outside
High-efficiency furnaces vent through white pipes in the wall. After snow, clear them of snow and ice.
Call right away if
